'National Commission on Status of Women' approved
The National Assembly on Thursday passed with consensus a bill to set up the National Commission on the Status of Women. It aims at promoting social, economic, political and legal rights of women as provided in the Constitution.
With the passage of the bill, Pakistan will be the fourth country after the UK and India to have such a commission. The commission will have sweeping powers to summon everyone in cases related to women.
The National Commission on Status of Women Bill 2012 had 22 amendments moved from both sides in the house. Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza deserves appreciation that intervened and ensured the way for the unanimous package.
The chairperson of the commission will be an experienced woman who has more than 15 years of service in the field of women’s rights. Aloso it will have two members from each province of whom at least one member shall be a woman, and one woman member each will be appointed from Fata, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad Capital Territory and from minorities.
