Poor teachers and torture machines!
Hundreds of school teachers were brutally beaten and tear-gassed by police near Karachi Press Club Tuesday night. The police also used water cannons to stop them from marching to Chief Minister House--a point many believe would add up some weight to their demands.
The action believably allowed by the government was that brutal that a few of the protestors fell unconscious leaving a very negative signal for the areas which traditionally back the PPP from the very onset.
The action rather a brutality was not new and before them many groups of citizens including the journalists have had a brunt at same place. All of them did not want the government to fall; they rather have been demanding for their rights enshrined in the law of the land.
This time the teachers who passed an IBA test for being eligible as teachers wanted the government to honour its obligation--make them permanent. But may be everyone has to pass a torture test too!!
The government and its torture machine have a rationale that since that was a 'red zone' area no one can raise the voice there, no matter guaranteed by the constitution of the country. They don’t have any reply that the area the aggrieved citizens use to raise their voice has been a center of expressing their freedom for over many many decades.
Hundreds of people gather in front of KPC every day and push for their demands and even if some of them rally to the Chief Minister House or Governor house it’s their right being citizen of this country. The police and its master the incumbent government do not have any logic to treat them in such a brutal way like they did with the teachers. The police in riot gear followed the teachers, chanting “Naara-e-Takbir, Allahu Akbar” as if they entered enemy area and some victory had been accomplished. Over 40 protesting teachers were taken into custody like prisoners of war.
When the TV channels air all what the beating machines of the government do there, the people who traditionally voted the PPP do wonder what a befitting way to honour their commitment with the PPP which has now to go to same people for vote in near future. Adding insult to the injury is that the government issued an ordinance late Tuesday night, giving 5,700 out of 7,200 of the teachers’ permanent jobs. Governor Ishratul Ebad issued the ordinance which is now with the law department. The teachers will be notified by the Sindh education department in the morning. The cases of the remaining teachers are being scrutinized and will be resolved in the next two or three days, says an official.
