Sindh’s civil society demands land redistribution in province
The civil society organizations of Sindh have demanded that farmers and peasants of Sindh should be granted land entitlements on state land as the Punjab has done through 'Punjab Conferment of Propriety Rights on Occupancy Tenants and Muqarraridars Act 2011'.
This also includes land that is in the possession of the irrigation, agriculture and railway departments and the cultivated land that is occupied by the security forces.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi Press Club the other day Karamat Ali (PILER), Mohammed Ali Shah (PFF), Jami Chandio and others said information and records of all landholdings that currently lies with the state be made public.
They appreciated the Punjab government for the Punjab Conferment of Propriety Rights on Occupancy Tenants and Muqarraridars Act 2011. It was tabled for discussion on March 16, 2011 in the Punjab Assembly and was passed on December 22, 2011. The Act provides legal framework for redistribution of around 400,000 acres of state land to an estimated 200,000 peasants.
They demanded that the Sindh Assembly as well as the Sindh Government should reiterate their commitment for the landless peasants especially women regarding the distribution of state land and initiate legislation on the pattern.
